Help running....
Hi All~
First off let me say that I REALLY want to be able to use this product.
Secondly I'm not that much of a N00b (is that how the youngins say it:) when it comes to computers and setting stuff up. I think this is case I don't know what I don't know.
and Lastly my problem:
For my game I use a Mac Laptop:
OSX 10.5.8
1.25 G4
1.25 GB RAM
It has the necessary Java 1.6 (although I'm not sure it's running properly) update from Apple.
I downloaded this http://www.exnebula.org/files/vcc/vcc-mac-1.1.0.dmg and opened it and went to use it. It seems to open and then doesn't do ANYTHING almost like it closed immediatley.
My limited knowledge of running things in Java tells me that it must be something in Java. But like I said I don't know what I don't know. Any Help would be VERY appreciated! I'm tired of trying to run a game in Word, and this seems like the PERFECT solution if it'd work.
I'll also gladly work through this problem off board if that is needed. My email is boyles.stewart@gmail.com please feel free to email more questions about this situation.
G4 may be slightly different
LeStew, VCC was tested on the Intel based Macs. The G4 has different binaries format. While that should not be a problem for the Java part, the Application does have some machine binaries that are dependent on the platform.
There are a couple of step we can do:
launch.logon your home directory? If so could you attach it here? This would indicated that java is starting but something is wrong. If none of this works, we can work via your email on trying to figure out what is messing the install. Using the instruction above some people made it run on old Mac models.
Apple does not provide Java 1.6 on PowerPC Macs
After a long and fun chat with LeStew we found out what the problem is...
Apple release a Java 1.6 update that does no work on 32-bit Power machines. Unfortunately there are some dependencies on Java 1.6.
We did look at an alternative Soylatte / OpenJDK. However the only PowerPC binaries are a really early beta.
Lets hope that Apple decides to support the long standing fan and get a Java 1.6 for them, or that the OpenJDK evolves. If time permits I will investigate a Java 1.5 version of VCC.
OpenJDK didn't work for me
I tried running VCC under OpenJDK on Linux with no luck, the Sun JRE worked fine though, looking forward to the next game session :)
Are you using a Mac PowerPC?
Are you using a Mac PowerPC? I believe the problem is that on the PowerPC Apple does not provide a Java6 JVM.
THANK YOU NEBULORUM!!!
Yes it is true Apple did not release a Java 1.6 for PowerPCs. And Soylatte/OpenJDK doesn't seem to recognize something in the VCC code. BUT! fear not fare adventurers, I was able to run Virtual PC and update the Java and it seems to run well! I can import Character Builder files and run a combat. I haven't tried to import Compendium files yet as I've been playing :)
I just want to say Thank you to Nebulorum for spending several hours with me troubleshooting the problem. He seemed truly perturbed by Apple's thoughtlessness towards the PowerPC users. And for that he get's an AWESOME award!
Thanks again!
