Ongoing damage

Note: Frog Posted this on another page and I moved it here

Have you entertained the idea of including a way to take care of ongoing damage in a more automated way? Once it is applied (via the effects?) the damage would be deducted from the hp of the target as specified thus eliminating the need to initiate the extra step of damaging the character.

On my mid range wish-list

Frog,

I have been considering this. Along with other this (like remind DM of Saving throws). This is definitely something I'd like to have. The tricky part it handling all that comes with damage (i.e. Resistance, Vulnerability, Immunity).

My current take on this would be show the DM a list of Ongoing damages and them let him adjust the final value to be applied as damage. This works more as a "friendly reminder" than an automatic system.

The problem is that to apply the correct ongoing damage you have to factor in: unstacking (easy), damage types, vulnerabilities, resistances and immunity. While the base cases are easy, there are some exceptions, such as powers that change these parameters.

Another challenge I'm facing is putting all the information and options on the screen. I'm running out of physical space (pixels are running short).

I'm not sure it needs to be that detailed. Before I found your system, I found another one (actually several) and while that one has some good qualities, I think I like your layout more. I thought if those two were combined then it would be perfect (at the time you didn't have conditions/effects). Now you have pretty much everything (at least that I am looking for) except for the ongoing damage thing. If you want to check it out here is the addy.

Yeah, I think your system is pretty darned nifty, not too cluttered. Some programs have way too much stuff in them.

Same here

Hey Frog,

I too have been using Encounter Manager. My issue is that GDG is no longer associating with Anubis, and Anubisware is no longer on the web. So that means there are not going to be any updates to the program. I also like the ongoing damage calculation of EM and I have added a feature request for VCC.

I agree that it does not need to be real complicated. If the creature has resistance to the ongoing damage, as the DM I factor that in when I place the effect (i.e if the dragon had resist 10 fire and the PC puts an ongoing 15 fire effect on the dragon, the effect that I add in EM would be ongoing 5 fire). If the resistance completely overrides the ongoing damage, I just don't add the effect. And since there are 3 effect spaces, you could change one of them into an "Ongoing Damage" space where you can choose the type of damage, the amount and it will automatically choose save ends.

Definitely feasable

I like this approach. I would suggest we move this discussion to the issue: #124: Auto damage/heal with conditions.
